Innovation Value Maturity Assessment

Assess how your organisation manages innovation

A short business diagnostic to help you understand how consistently innovation is planned, funded, protected, governed and measured across your organisation.

The assessment consists of 24 questions and provides an immediate maturity profile when completed.

The ABGi Innovation Value Maturity Assessment looks beyond individual innovation projects to consider the processes and decisions that support them, including:

✔    how investment is prioritised
✔    how funding and tax incentives are considered
✔    how intellectual property is managed and
✔    how the value created by innovation is measured

What the assessment covers

The assessment considers eight areas that can influence how effectively an organisation manages innovation and the value it receives from its investment.

Innovation Strategy

How clearly innovation priorities are linked to wider business strategy, leadership and investment decisions.

Innovation Pipeline

How ideas and opportunities are identified, assessed and progressed, including project ownership and decision-making.

Investment & Funding

How external funding opportunities are identified and whether funding is considered early enough to inform project scope, timing and investment.

Tax & Financial Incentives

How consistently R&D activity and expenditure are identified and relevant incentives and tax reliefs are considered.

IP & Commercialisation

How intellectual property is identified, protected, owned and commercially exploited.

Governance, Evidence & Risk

How innovation projects are governed and how technical activity, decisions, costs and supporting evidence are documented.

Measurement & Performance

How the financial, operational and strategic value of innovation is measured and used to inform future investment decisions.

Sustainability & Future Readiness

How sustainability, resource efficiency and changes in regulation, technology and markets are considered within innovation activity.

How the assessment works

✔   You will be asked to respond to three statements in each of the eight areas.

✔   For each statement, you rate your organisation from 1 to 5, based on how consistently the relevant approach or process is applied, from Not in place through to Embedded / Optimised.

✔   Once all 24 questions are complete, your results are calculated automatically.

✔   The assessment is designed to provide an organisation-level view. Responses should therefore reflect how your business generally operates rather than the performance of one individual project.

24 questions | 8 areas | 1–5 maturity scale | Immediate results

What you will receive

On completion, you will receive an Innovation Value Maturity score and an overall maturity level, ranging from Reactive to Optimised.

Your results also include:

  • a score for each of the eight assessment areas
  • your three strongest areas
  • your three priority areas
  • potential opportunities associated with the areas identified
  • a suggested next step based on your overall maturity

This provides a structured view of where processes are already well established and where further review or improvement may be appropriate.

How the results can be used

The assessment provides a starting point for reviewing how innovation is managed across your organisation.

Your results highlight areas that may need strengthening or further investigation, including funding, R&D tax relief and other tax incentives, intellectual property and Patent Box, governance and evidence, performance measurement, innovation strategy and sustainable innovation.

The opportunities identified are areas for further investigation, rather than recommendations or confirmation of eligibility, and should be reviewed in more detail before action is taken.

What happens next?

There is no requirement to take any further action after completing the assessment.

Your results can be used internally to support discussions around innovation priorities, processes and investment.

If you would like to explore the findings in more detail, ABGi can review your results with you.

Depending on the maturity profile, this may involve a broader review across your innovation activity or a more focused discussion around individual areas identified by the assessment.

The Innovation Value Maturity Assessment is an indicative business diagnostic. It does not constitute tax, legal, funding, financial or other professional advice. Any potential opportunity identified through the assessment should be reviewed in more detail before action is taken.
