European Grants

Our team of consultants have extensive experience developing applications throughout a range of European Grants – Horizon Europe, Eureka – Eurostars and, in particular, EIC Accelerator

EIC Accelerator

The EIC Accelerator provides financial support to high-risk/high impact innovations with the potential to create new markets, transform existing ones and contribute to societal challenges.

Build on scientific discovery, radical thinking or technological breakthroughs (‘deep tech’). The innovation activities need to be currently at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 6 or above.

This grant is designed to support the most promising and innovative projects and is managed by the European Innovation Council.

✅  It is an instrument for the market launch of innovative new products, services and business models that have the potential to stimulate growth.

✅  It provides funding for the latest developments right up to their market launch.

If you are a UK SME you can apply for a grant (only) up to €2.5m to cover a maximum of 70% of your total eligible costs. If you are a European Member State you can apply for blended finance (grant and equity) and or investment up to €10m.

EIC Programmes – journey

An overview of how EIC schemes fit together as parts of a continuum of support for innovation, from early-stage research through to scale-up and inclusive participation.

EIC Pathfinder

Supports very early, high-risk, high-reward research and visionary ideas (TRL ~1-4). Aims to generate new scientific or technological breakthroughs that could later underpin disruptive innovations.

EIC Transition

Bridges the gap between research and innovation: validating and demonstrating technologies in more relevant environments, maturing business cases, and preparing for commercial development (TRL ~3-6). Often builds on outputs from Pathfinder or from other research funding.

EIC Pre-Accelerator

Targets early-stage deep-tech startups (especially in widening / lower-performing innovation regions) to build technology, business, and investor readiness (e.g. from TRL ~4 to ~6). Acts as a stepping-stone to position startups to apply later for the EIC Accelerator or attract private investment.

EIC STEP Scale Up

A newer “pilot” initiative (2025 onward) to provide larger scale investment support to companies developing strategic technologies (e.g. digital, biotech, clean tech) critical for European competitiveness. It operates within or alongside the Accelerator framework but is targeted at higher funding amounts (e.g. €10-30 million) and strategic domains.

EIC Accelerator

Focused on supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and startups with innovations that are ready to enter and scale in markets (TRL ~5-9).

Provides a mix of grants and equity / investment support, plus coaching, mentoring, and business acceleration services.

Women TechEU

A targeted initiative under the European Innovation Ecosystems programme, providing grants (€75,000 non-dilutive) plus coaching, mentoring, business support, and networking to women-led deep-tech startups. Designed to help women-led ventures prepare to scale, including possibly applying for EIC Accelerator and other schemes.

How they “fit together” in practice

These programmes are designed to cover successive stages of the innovation lifecycle, allowing a promising idea or technology to progress from first concept, through validation and demonstration, to commercialisation and scale, with the right type of support at each stage.

→   Organisations might begin with Pathfinder (or other research funding) for early disruptive ideas, then use Transition to test and mature these in relevant environments, before entering Accelerator or STEP Scale Up for commercial deployment and scaling.

→   Pre-Accelerator is complementary: it helps startups (especially in less developed innovation regions) to build readiness so they can successfully compete for Accelerator funding.

→   Women TechEU is a “side path” that runs in parallel: giving women-led deep tech startups early support so they are better positioned to enter the main EIC ladder (Accelerator, etc.).

→   The STEP Scale Up is more selective and specialised, intended for firms in strategic technology domains needing larger capital injections, acting as an escalation route beyond standard Accelerator funding.

Our customers say…

The process of claiming R&D tax relief with ABGi was painless and the outcome exceeded our expectations.Their Technical Analysts’ knowledge is fantastic, they fully understood our engineering business and products, with minimal input from our staff. Everyone at Cajero is really busy running the business, ABGi appreciated this, accommodating the time pressures from our side and kept our work to a minimum.

Alex Harding, CEO
Cajero Limited

We were not aware of any R&D incentives that could be applicable to our company. However after our accountants introduced us to ABGi, we were impressed from day one! The understanding achieved by their analysts of our processes really was significant; few professional bodies we have encountered had their level of engineering expertise, thus giving us the confidence to move forward with a claim.

Jon Pitt, Financial Director
L.M.g. Solutions Ltd

Like with many companies, we are constantly busy and at the start of our journey with ABGI, we weren’t sure if the effort would be worth the benefit. Luckily this wasn’t a feeling that lasted for long, as it was surprisingly straightforward and not as much paperwork as first expected.  We were totally stunned at the amount claimed, we really couldn’t believe it. The tax benefit has since allowed us to reinvest the money, buy new machinery and hire 2 new people.

Rod Wah, Managing Director
Beverston Engineering
