Discover the EIC Pre-Accelerator – EU funding of up to €500K to help deep-tech startups in widening countries build investor readiness and scale potential.
The EIC Pre-Accelerator is a new pilot instrument launched by the European Innovation Council (EIC) under Horizon Europe. Its purpose is to strengthen the innovation and investment-readiness of early-stage deep-tech startups located in “widening countries” — EU Member States or associated countries with less developed innovation ecosystems. It acts as a bridge programme, helping promising deep-tech ventures mature in terms of technology, business model and investor readiness so they can successfully access follow-up funding such as the EIC Accelerator or private investment.
Raise readiness for EIC Accelerator / follow-on funding
The main goal is to prepare startups to be competitive for the EIC Accelerator or private investment
De-risk early deep-tech innovation
It supports startups moving from lab validation (TRL 4) to demonstration in relevant environments (TRL 5–6).
Promote innovation in underrepresented regions
It aims to reduce disparities by directing resources to “widening” countries.
Provide structured acceleration support
Participants receive coaching, mentoring, networking, pitch training and other services.
Fast-track access to EIC Accelerator
Successful participants may benefit from a simplified route into the EIC Accelerator.
Seal of Excellence
Strong but unfunded proposals may receive a Seal of Excellence, which acts as a quality label and provides access to continued support services.
☑ Be a single company (not a consortium).
☑ Be legally established in a widening country.
☑ Be an SME or small mid-cap with growth ambitions.
☑ Develop a deep-tech innovation already validated in the lab (TRL ≥ 4).
☑ Hold or have secured intellectual property rights.
☑ Present a clear route-to-market with milestones and KPIs.
❌ Consortia cannot apply.
❌ Projects below TRL 4 or already too advanced are not a good fit.
❌ The company must co-fund 30 %.
❌ Non-widening country companies are not eligible.
