Great Examples of UK Manufacturers Helping Fight Covid-19

Last month the UK Government called on manufacturers to change production capabilities to support the fight against Covid-19.

A number of them have answered the call, including Vauxhall and Airbus which have altered their processes to 3D-print parts for ventilators.

Here are some further examples of manufacturing companies showing real innovation in meeting the challenges of this global pandemic:

  • ABGI UK client Craven Co Ltd, based in Knaresborough, North Yorkshire, which usually specialises in wirework storage and handling solutions, has created and distributed 800 intravenous drip stands a day after being fast-tracked into the NHS supply chain. The company is supplying frontline medical equipment to NHS Nightingale hospitals across the country.
  • High complex, precision machined parts specialists Beverston Engineering Ltd, based in Merseyside, is currently developing critical prototype parts as part of the @VentilatorU consortium to supply the NHS with medical ventilators.
  • Last month UK engineering services giant Babcock International Group announced it would be spearheading in conjunction with a number of UK manufacturers to help with the assembly and production of 10,000 ventilators for the NHS.
  • Meanwhile, Star Instruments in Belfast, a leading UK manufacturer of high quality pressure, temperature and flow instrumentation, is now producing and supplying gauges for ventilators. Star is one of the companies involved in Project Pitlane whose focus includes supporting production scaling of existing ventilator designs as part of the VentilatorChallengeUK consortium.
  • Scottish chemical producer Proficio has switched its processes to meet the high demand for hand sanitiser while Aberdeenshire-based brewer BrewDog has also changed its production line to make hand sanitiser.
